What a Degree in Hotel Management Can Do for You

A hotel management degree is one of the most career-flexible qualifications you can hold today. It opens doors in luxury hotels, international resorts, cruise lines, airlines, hospitals, retail chains, and even entrepreneurship. At IHMC Udaipur, our graduates have gone on to work in some of the most prestigious hospitality organisations in India and across the world. In this post, we break down exactly what a hotel management degree can do for your career, and what you can realistically expect to earn at each stage.

What does a hotel management degree cover?

A hotel management degree is not just about running a hotel. It covers a wide range of operational and management skills that apply across the entire hospitality and service sector. At IHMC-U, Balicha, students learn food production, food and beverage service, front office operations, housekeeping management, hotel accounting, marketing, and human resource management. As a result, graduates are not limited to one department or one type of organisation. They are equipped to work across multiple sectors from the first day of employment.

Salary structure — what you can realistically earn

One of the most common questions students ask before enrolling is what they will actually earn after graduation. Here is an honest, realistic breakdown based on where IHMC-U graduates have been placed and what the industry currently pays at each level.

Entry level (fresher, 0–2 years experience)

After completing a diploma or bachelor’s programme and your industrial training, most fresh graduates joining five-star hotels in India start between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹4 lakh per year. This figure is for domestic placements. For international placements — such as IHMC-U graduates currently working at properties in New Zealand, Mauritius, the Maldives, and Dubai — compensation is paid in the local currency and is significantly higher in purchasing power terms, often equivalent to ₹6 lakh to ₹9 lakh per year even at the starting level.

Some IHMC-U freshers placed at top-tier properties like Oberoi Udaivilas, Taj Lake Palace, Leela Palace, and ITC Momentos receive starting packages at the upper end of this range because five-star hotel wage structures differ from mid-segment properties.

Mid-level (3–7 years experience)

By the time a hotel management graduate reaches supervisor or assistant manager level, typically between three and seven years of experience, salary ranges in India move to ₹6 lakh to ₹12 lakh per year depending on the brand, city, and department. Our placement records show IHMC-U alumni at this stage working as Assistant Food and Beverage Managers at ITC Hotels, Duty Managers at Radisson properties, Resort Managers, Restaurant Managers, and Operations Managers at brands like Accor Hotels. You can see their stories on our placements page.

At international properties, mid-level roles in countries like the UAE, Australia, and the USA carry packages that are often two to three times the Indian equivalent before conversion.

Senior level (8+ years experience)

Senior hospitality professionals with a hotel management background command some of the strongest packages in the service sector. IHMC-U alumni at this stage include a Director of Housekeeping at the Ritz Carlton in Georgetown, USA, an Executive Sous Chef at Taj Pratap Mahal Ajmer, an F&B Manager at The Oberoi Cecil Shimla, and an Operations Manager at Accor Hotels. At this level, domestic CTC figures range from ₹18 lakh to ₹35 lakh per year for senior managers at luxury brands, while international senior roles command USD or AED salaries that push the equivalent well beyond ₹40 lakh per year.

Career paths a hotel management degree opens

The hospitality industry is broader than most students realise when they first enrol. A hotel management degree from IHMC-U can lead you into all of the following directions.

Hotels and resorts is the most direct path. Graduates enter as management trainees across departments: front office, food and beverage, housekeeping, kitchen, and events. Brands that regularly recruit IHMC-U graduates include Taj Hotels, Oberoi Hotels and Resorts, ITC Hotels, Marriott International, Hilton, Leela Palace, Raffles, Trident, and Radisson.

Cruise lines are a path many students do not consider at first, but IHMC-U has a strong track record here. Graduates have worked with Royal Caribbean Cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines, MSC Cruises, and P&O Cruises Australia. Cruise line roles come with accommodation and meals included, which means the take-home value of the package is considerably higher than the base salary suggests.

Airlines and airports offer roles in cabin crew, airport hospitality, and ground services. IHMC-U alumni have gone on to work with Air India and Delhi International Airport.

Food service and retail is a growing segment for hotel management graduates. Reliance Retail, IRCTC, hospital catering, and corporate cafeteria management are all sectors where IHMC-U alumni currently hold positions.

Entrepreneurship is an increasingly popular destination for hotel management graduates with a few years of operational experience. The combination of food production skills, service management knowledge, and business training from an MBA in Hospitality Management makes graduates well positioned to open restaurants, cloud kitchens, catering businesses, or boutique stays.

Why IHMC-U graduates get hired by the best

The placement outcomes described above do not happen by accident. They are the result of how training is structured at IHMC Udaipur. Every student completes mandatory industrial training, which means they arrive at their first job already familiar with the tools, standards, and workflows used by five-star hotels. Our placement cell has built relationships with hotel groups across India and internationally over more than twenty years, which means when our students apply, they are applying with an institution that recruiters already recognise and respect.

You can read the full record of our placements, including international placements in New Zealand, Mauritius, Maldives, Dubai, the USA, and Australia, on our placements page.

Which IHMC-U programme is right for you?

If you are starting after completing class 12, a diploma programme in hotel management, culinary arts, food and beverage service, or front office is the fastest route into the industry, typically one year in duration and directly vocational in its focus. Our bachelor’s programme in hotel management is a three-year degree that gives you a broader foundation and makes you eligible for management trainee programmes at larger hotel groups. If you already hold a bachelor’s degree and want to move into leadership or general management roles, our MBA in Hospitality Management is the right step.

All programmes are affiliated to Vishvakarma Skills University, Jaipur, approved by the Government of Rajasthan.
